Being someone’s emergency contact is a promotion. Act like you earned it.

That line on a form means somebody decided you are the person they want reached on the worst day. It is a bigger statement than most friendships ever make out loud, because it assumes you will pick up, stay calm and know what to do. Nobody interviews you for it. They just quietly put your name down and hope.

Make yourself findable. Keep your phone on at night, know the name of their doctor or their parent, and answer unknown numbers if you are listed for someone. Ask them once what they would want you to do, and ask who else needs calling.
