Whoever asks “you sure you want to post that?” is looking out for the you of five years from now.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Anybody willing to ask that is accepting a small cost to spare you a large one. It is easier to say nothing and let you press send, and the person who pauses you is risking being told to relax. What they are seeing is the gap between how a thing feels tonight and how it reads in two years, to somebody deciding whether to hire you.

Build in your own version of that pause. Draft it, leave it, look again in the morning, and notice how often the answer changes. When a friend asks you the question, do not defend the post; just reread it as a stranger would.
