On a late close, “I’ll wait till you’re in your car” is one of the most loyal sentences there is.

Standing in an empty parking lot for four extra minutes buys somebody something real. It is not a grand gesture and it is not free either; you are tired, your own ride is waiting, and the easy move is a wave and a drive off. Choosing to stay means their safety outranks your convenience, which is roughly the whole definition of looking out for someone.
On your next late shift, do not leave until everybody has an engine running. Say it out loud so they know they are not keeping you. If you are the one leaving first, text the last person once you are home.
Who has waited with you until you were safely gone?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
