Coworkers trust the one who says “I’ll find out” and then actually reports back.
GRATITUDE
GRATITUDE
Four words make you useful: I will find out. Most people either guess, which is worse than useless, or say they do not know and leave it there. Closing the loop is the rare part, and it is what turns you from a coworker into somebody who can be given things. Nobody expects a new person to have answers, only to come back.
Take the question, write it on your hand if you have to, and return with the answer even if it is bad news. Say what you found and who told you. Do that three times and people will start bringing you problems, which is how jobs grow.
What did you promise to look into and never report back on?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
