Jealousy hits good friends too. What matters is whether they still show up to clap.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Envy shows up in decent people and it is not a disqualification. Somebody who has wanted the same thing you just got will feel a flinch before they feel happy for you, and that is ordinary machinery, not a character defect. What matters is the next five minutes. The good ones feel it, set it down, and clap anyway, which is harder than not feeling it at all.

Judge by behaviour rather than by whether somebody’s face was perfect. And watch yourself in the same situation: when a friend wins, find the sentence and say it out loud even if you have to push past something first.
