Cancel enough times and people stop inviting you. Not out of spite. Out of math.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Dropping out of plans is rarely treated as a crime, and it does change the arithmetic. People invite with an expected answer in mind, and after four cancellations the expected answer is no, so they stop including you to avoid the awkwardness of asking again. Nobody holds a meeting about it. Your name falls off the list, which is why it feels like being dropped when it was closer to rounding.

Say no earlier instead of yes and then no. A clean refusal costs nothing and keeps you on the list. And if you have cancelled a lot lately, propose something yourself, which resets the arithmetic faster than an apology.
