A pickup game with no scorekeeper often ends with two different scores. Memory tends to take a side.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Memory is not a recording, it keeps the parts you cared about. In a close game, what you cared about was your own baskets, so those are vivid and the other team’s are a blur. Nobody in that argument is lying. You are both reporting honestly from a version that quietly favored whoever is remembering.
Call the score out loud after each basket, or let one person keep it, before the game gets tight. It feels unnecessary right up until it is not. The same habit helps anywhere a disagreement about facts is coming: write it down while nobody minds.
