Every person has entire years you will never know existed.

Anyone you know has whole years you have no picture of. A period of illness, a job that shaped them, a version of themselves nobody in their current life ever met. You are seeing a narrow slice of a long story and mistaking it for the whole because it is all that is visible.

When you find yourself confident about who someone is, remember how much of them you have never seen. Ask about an era of their life you know nothing about. It changes the conversation, and it usually changes your read of the person in front of you.
