If a machine learns your preferences perfectly, how will it recognize the day you outgrow them?

A system built to predict you from your past will keep offering you the person you have been. That works well until you change, and then it works against you, since the change looks like noise to be smoothed away rather than a signal. The better the prediction, the harder it is to be new.

Deliberately introduce things that do not fit your pattern. Read outside your usual, follow someone whose taste is unlike yours, choose something you would not have chosen. Not because variety is virtuous, but because a person needs some room where they are not being predicted.
