An interface can make a decision feel inevitable simply by making every alternative inconvenient.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

You can steer people without forbidding anything, simply by making one option effortless and every other option require several steps. Nobody is coerced, everyone technically chooses, and the outcome is almost entirely determined by the layout. Convenience is the strongest available form of persuasion.

When a choice feels obvious, ask how much of that is the design. Deliberately take the harder path once and see whether the alternative was actually worse or merely less convenient. And if you build things, remember that where you put the easy option is a decision about what people will do.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which choice did you make because every other option was harder?
