The phrase we have always done it this way may contain a beginning nobody investigated.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Traditions rarely begin as traditions. Usually there was a practical reason, a shortage, a schedule, a person’s preference, and once the reason vanished the practice stayed and acquired dignity. By the time it is described as how we have always done it, the origin is gone and the phrase itself is doing the work of preventing anyone from looking. Age is being used as an argument in place of one.

The useful question is not whether to keep it but what it was originally for. Ask someone older, or work it out, and then decide with the reason in front of you. Plenty of inherited practices survive that examination easily, and the ones that do not were costing someone something.
