The person who must prove they belong begins the day with work others never see.
RESILIENCE
RESILIENCE
Some people begin every interaction by establishing that they are entitled to be there. It happens through tone, dress, credentials mentioned early, a slightly over-prepared answer, all before the actual task starts. That effort is invisible to everyone whose belonging was assumed, which is why it is so often mistaken for tension or over-eagerness. The work is real and it is spent before anything else begins.
If you have never had to do it, that absence is worth noticing rather than assuming as normal. Say the belonging out loud early for people who might be doing it, and treat their first contribution as expected rather than surprising. Removing that opening cost gives you the rest of what they can do.
Where do you spend energy just establishing that you belong?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
