A public promise needs a route by which an ordinary person can claim it.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

A promise made in public is only worth what the claiming process makes it worth. If there is no route, or the route is obscure, or it requires knowledge most people do not have, the announcement is where the commitment begins and ends. The gap between declared and claimable is where good intentions go to be quietly nullified. Delivery is a design problem, not a matter of sincerity.

When something is promised to you, look immediately for the mechanism by which an ordinary person claims it. If there is not one, that is the thing to ask about. And where you make commitments, describe the route in the same breath as the promise.
