The desire to be mysterious can become another way of asking to be studied.

Withholding can be a form of solicitation. Presenting yourself as hard to know invites people to work at knowing you, which puts the attention exactly where a more direct request would have put it. The mystery is doing the asking, in a form that never has to admit it is asking.

If you tend toward this, notice what you actually want from the person and whether it could simply be said. Being known usually requires telling somebody something. Cultivated opacity is a slow route to it and often arrives nowhere.
