An unfinished conversation can make years feel like an extended pause.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A conversation that never finished can hold years open. The mind keeps the file active, rehearsing what it would say, waiting for an ending that no longer has anywhere to happen, and the effect is a low continuous suspension underneath everything else. The unfinished part is not the words but the lack of any place to put them.

Sometimes the conversation can be resumed, and it is worth considering whether the door is really closed. When it is not possible, the ending may have to be made rather than received: writing the unsent thing, saying it aloud, telling one person what you never got to say. That is not the same as closure, but it can let the file finally rest.
