The instruction use your judgment becomes complicated when yesterday’s judgment was punished for delaying production.
LEADERSHIP
LEADERSHIP
Use your judgement means nothing if judgement was punished last time. Once someone has been penalised for a cautious call that cost time, the instruction becomes a trap: they are told to decide and shown what deciding costs. What people do is set by the consequences they have seen, not by the wording of the policy.
If you ask for judgement, you have to back the judgement you did not want, at least publicly, at least the first few times. And if you are working somewhere that punishes caution while claiming to value it, believe the pattern rather than the statement, and record your reasoning when you make a call.
Where were you asked to decide and then blamed for deciding?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
