A repaired crack records both the break and somebody’s decision that the object should continue.

Visible repair tells two stories at once. Something broke, and someone decided it was worth keeping anyway, and the second decision is the one that shows. The mark is not a record of damage but of a judgement about value made after the damage.
Think about what you have chosen to repair rather than replace, in objects and elsewhere, and what that choice says. If there is something currently cracked in your life that you would like to keep, the useful question is not whether it can be made as good as new. It is whether you are willing to keep it with the mark showing.
