The person translating a family conversation deserves a turn to participate as themselves.

Being the translator in a family is a job with no breaks. The child or relative who speaks both languages spends the meal converting, softening, explaining, and holding two conversations at once, which means they are working while everyone else is visiting. They rarely get to say what they think, because their sentences belong to somebody else.
If someone is translating for you, stop occasionally and ask what they think about the thing being discussed. Give them a stretch of the meal with no interpreting at all. Where you can, arrange another way, so the job is not permanently theirs.
