A family should discuss care before the nearest person has become its permanent answer.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Care usually gets assigned by geography rather than by agreement. Whoever lives closest starts doing the small things, then the medium things, and within a year they are the default for everything, without anyone having chosen it or thanked them for it. Distance turns into a kind of exemption for everybody else, and the arrangement hardens before it is ever named.

Have the conversation early, while it is still hypothetical and nobody is exhausted. Ask who does what, what the distant relatives will contribute, and what money is involved. Set a time to revisit it, since needs change and the first arrangement rarely holds.
