A family update should share what the person agreed to share, not everything the family wants explained.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Families have an appetite for detail that can outrun what the person at the center has consented to. Relatives want the full picture, the prognosis, the numbers, the reason, and whoever is passing on news feels the pressure to satisfy that, often out of genuine love. But the story belongs to the person living it, and the family’s need to understand does not create a right to know. Being the messenger means holding a line as much as passing on information.

Ask exactly what may be repeated, and repeat only that. When pressed for more, say plainly that it is not yours to give.
