Family information should be shared with the person concerned before it becomes everyone’s concern.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Family news travels fast and rarely in the right order. Somebody hears about a diagnosis, a separation or a plan from a cousin before the person concerned has been spoken to, and by then the story has collected opinions and edits. Being discussed before being consulted is its own small injury, on top of whatever the news already carries. Order matters more than most people think.

When something involves one person most, tell that person first and ask what they want shared. If you hear something secondhand, take it back to them rather than passing it along.
