The reviewer who explains their experience gives you more than a list of preferred changes.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A list of changes tells you what one person would have done; a description of their experience tells you what actually happened to a reader. The first is a preference and often wrong, the second is evidence you cannot get any other way, because you can never read your own work as a stranger. Where they got lost matters more than what they would rename.

Ask what happened while they were reading or using it, rather than what they would change. Take the observations seriously and the instructions loosely.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Would you rather hear what someone felt or what they would change?
