A person leaving a long career deserves something to look forward to beyond being free from it.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Relief is a thin thing to live on. Leaving work after many years removes a structure that shaped the week and much of how a person was known, and the absence of that pressure is not the same as having somewhere to put the hours. Freedom from something needs a companion, which is freedom toward something.

If you are approaching an ending like this, or standing beside someone who is, let the conversation move past what will stop. Name one thing that will start, even a small one, such as a class or a long postponed project. It does not have to be grand to be worth waking up for.
