A family routine should help people meet one another, not simply move them through the same rooms.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Living in the same house is not the same as spending time together. A week can be fully occupied with lifts, meals eaten in shifts and shared corridors, and still contain almost no moment where anyone looks at anyone else properly. Efficiency in a household can quietly remove the very contact the household exists for.

Find one point in the week that already happens and make it a meeting rather than a handover. It could be Sunday breakfast, the drive to the shops, ten minutes before bed. Keep it short and keep it regular, and let the conversation in it be about something other than logistics.
