The stories you repeat about someone should leave them room to become more than the story.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Repeated anecdotes fix a person in place. The tale of the time they got lost, or panicked, or said the wrong thing at a wedding, is funny the first few times and gradually becomes the official account, so that a person who has changed considerably is still being introduced by an incident from a decade ago. Families do this most of all, and usually with affection.

Notice which story you always tell about someone and try leaving it out. Say something current instead, something that reflects who they are now. If a story is one they would rather retire, retire it, whether or not it is your favourite.
