A clear refusal can be kinder than a long series of reluctant delays.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Softening a no by stretching it out feels considerate and usually is not. The other person keeps the hope alive, plans around a maybe, asks again, and spends weeks on something you already knew the answer to. Delay protects the person refusing from an uncomfortable minute at the cost of someone else’s time.
When you know the answer is no, give it within a day. Say it plainly, without a list of justifications that invites negotiation. You can be warm and final in the same two sentences.
Which request are you delaying because refusing feels too hard to say?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
