Care feels different when the person receiving it can refuse a small thing safely.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

If turning something down risks the helper’s mood, agreement stops meaning very much. The person receiving care learns to accept things they did not want in order to keep the peace, and every small yes after that carries a little less truth. Being able to refuse the tea, the walk or the extra blanket without any cost is what makes the rest of it consent.

Offer choices rather than plans, and let a no pass without comment or a second try. Watch your own face when you are turned down. Say plainly that declining is fine, and then prove it the next time it happens.
