The practiced step becomes expressive when the dancer stops treating it as an examination.

Technique and expression sit at opposite ends of the same practice. While a movement is still being graded internally, all the attention goes to whether it is correct, which leaves nothing over for what it might say. The step does not change when that shifts; the person performing it stops watching themselves and starts meaning something. This is why competence often arrives long before anything interesting does.
Find something you can already do well and do it once without assessing it. Playing, speaking, cooking, presenting. The self-marking is the part to put down, not the standard.
