The final whistle releases the contest before it releases the feelings inside it.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Official endings are instantaneous and the rest of the ending is not. The result is fixed at a particular second, while the body is still full of a contest it has not been told about yet. The same holds well beyond sport: the meeting closes, the interview finishes, the argument stops, and you keep running for an hour afterwards. Nothing is wrong with you for still being in it.

Give yourself the hour after a hard thing and decide nothing important in it. Walk, eat, say very little. Judgements made while you are still winding down are rarely the ones you would make later.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What ended officially while you were still carrying it?
