A familiar joke can let a care relationship remember its earlier language.

When illness or age reorganises a relationship, most of the talk becomes logistics: medication, appointments, whether the heating is on. An old joke cuts across all of that for a moment and returns both people to who they were before the arrangement changed. Nothing gets solved by it. What it says is that the earlier version of the relationship is still in the room, which is often what both people most want to hear.
If you are caring for someone, keep one small piece of your old shared language in circulation. A nickname or a running joke costs nothing and does work no practical conversation can do.
What old joke still reaches someone you now spend time caring for?
