An expectation can become unfair without ever being spoken aloud.

Unspoken expectations grow because nobody has to defend them. A pattern settles in, one person keeps doing the thing, and over years it hardens into an assumption that would sound unreasonable if anybody put it in a sentence. Silence protects it from the test that speaking would apply. That is why the most lopsided arrangements are often the ones never discussed.
Take something you assume about a person close to you and say it aloud as a request. If it sounds unreasonable when spoken, it was unreasonable when silent. Let them answer as though it were being asked for the first time.
What do you expect from someone without ever having said it?
