The person who asks better questions often reaches places the person with faster answers misses.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Speed of answering and depth of understanding are different capacities, and the first often prevents the second. A fast answer terminates the inquiry, and if it is roughly right nobody looks further. The slower person, still asking, ends up somewhere the quick answer never reached.

If you tend to answer quickly, practise holding the response for a moment and asking one more question first. If you tend to defer to whoever answers fastest, notice that speed is not evidence. In both cases the useful move is to keep the question open slightly longer than feels comfortable.
