The bicycle stored unused still holds a version of the owner’s intended afternoons.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Unused objects are stored intentions. The bicycle in the hallway, the instrument in its case, the unopened box of paints all describe a life somebody meant to have, and keeping them holds the plan open without acting on it. Sometimes the intention is real and simply needs a first Saturday. Sometimes the object is doing the wanting on your behalf.

Pick one such thing and give it a date this month. Use it once, badly, and see what happens. If imagining it gone brings relief, let somebody else have it without guilt.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What do you own that belongs to a life you postponed?
