A secret told as a favor can leave the listener carrying a problem they did not choose.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Being trusted feels like a gift while it is being handed over. Afterwards the listener holds information they cannot use, cannot mention, and may have to sit on in front of the very people it concerns. What arrived as closeness becomes a small, permanent job. The teller gets relief, and the cost lands somewhere else.

Before passing something on, ask whether you are sharing it or handing it over, and say plainly what you hope the other person will do with it. If you are already carrying something heavy, it is fair to say you would rather not be told the next one.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What have you told someone that they then had to carry?
