The event you feared can arrive carrying a problem you never imagined.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Worry rehearses one version of the future and calls it preparation. What arrives is usually a different arrangement of difficulties, sometimes easier than the rehearsal and sometimes harder in a way that was never on the list. All that practice bought no accuracy, though it used up a good deal of the present. A mind cannot pre-solve a situation it has not met.

When you catch yourself rehearsing, ask what you would need in any version of it: some money, a person to call, some rest. Build that instead, since general readiness survives contact with the real thing better than a script does.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What did you rehearse fearing that arrived completely differently?
