Learning is uncomfortable because old certainty has to make room.

Learning something new frequently requires giving up something you were certain of, and that certainty was doing work: it made decisions simpler and made you feel competent. Losing it costs more than the new information gains, at first, which is why real learning often feels bad rather than exciting.
When you find yourself resisting an idea, ask what you would have to give up if it were true. Naming that makes the resistance intelligible rather than mysterious. Then decide on the merits, knowing that the discomfort you feel is about the loss rather than about the idea being wrong.
What belief would you have to loosen to learn something new?
