The patch can record care without pretending the damage never happened.

Repair comes in two kinds. One tries to make the damage disappear, so that the object can go on claiming it was never hurt. The other lets the mend be visible, which turns the object into a record of both things at once: what happened, and the fact that somebody chose to keep it. The second is not a lesser version of the first.

When something you value is damaged, consider mending it in a way that shows. And if you are the one carrying a mended place, you are allowed to let it be seen rather than managed.
