A borrowed tradition can become yours through the care of understanding it.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Taking on a practice from outside your own family or culture is not automatically theft and not automatically welcome. What decides it is usually effort: whether you learned where it came from, what it is for, which parts are casual and which are not, and whether you asked anyone who would know. Borrowing without that turns a meaningful thing into decoration. Borrowing with it is how most traditions have always travelled.

If you have picked something up from elsewhere, spend an hour learning its history properly. Knowing why the thing is done the way it is done changes how you do it, and that is what earns it.
