The style chosen quietly can be the first public sign of a private decision.

Decisions are usually made long before they are announced, and they often show up first in something small and deniable. A different coat, a changed haircut, a ring taken off, a room painted: the person has already decided something and is testing what it looks like out in the world. Nothing has been said, and something has been said. That is how most large changes begin.

If you notice a change like that in someone, take it as it comes rather than interpreting it aloud. And if you are the one making it, allow yourself the quiet version first; you do not owe anybody an announcement.
