Inherited expectations can occupy more room than inherited furniture.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
What gets passed down is not only objects. A sense of what a respectable life looks like, which subjects are not discussed, what counts as success and what counts as letting people down: none of it appears on any list, and all of it takes up space in the decisions you make. Furniture can be put in a spare room. Expectations tend to sit in the middle of everything, without ever being named.
Try writing down one rule you were never actually told. Seeing it in your own words is usually the first point at which you can decide whether you still agree with it.
Which family expectation still takes space you would rather use differently?
