An unfashionable pleasure can be unusually free from the work of explanation.

Anything currently admired comes with a job attached. You have to have opinions about it, keep up, position yourself among other people who like it, and the enjoyment gets mixed with a small ongoing performance. Something nobody rates leaves you alone with it entirely, since there is no status to gain and therefore nothing to manage. That is a real freedom, and it is rarely counted as one.

Give time to the thing you like that nobody is impressed by. Noticing how little you have to think about while doing it will tell you how much work the fashionable pleasures were quietly asking of you.
