The person moving slowly may be protecting an independence they value deeply.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Slowness can be a strategy rather than a limit. Taking the stairs carefully, doing a task in stages, declining an arm: each can be how somebody keeps doing a thing for themselves rather than handing it over. The pace looks like difficulty from outside and feels like autonomy from inside. Speeding someone up often means taking the task away from them.
When you want to help, ask rather than reach, and accept a no without repeating the offer. Hold the door, allow the extra minute, keep the conversation going while it happens. Waiting quietly is a form of respect that costs you very little.
Whose slowness have you rushed without asking what it protects?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
