An ordinary refusal can protect a commitment the listener does not know exists.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
A no often has a yes standing behind it. The person declining may be protecting an evening they promised somebody, a course of treatment, a child’s routine, or their own capacity to be useful tomorrow, and none of that is owed to whoever asked. What looks like reluctance is frequently loyalty pointed elsewhere. Refusals are rarely as free as they appear from outside.
When someone turns you down, let the no stand without an investigation. And when it is your turn, remember that a reason is optional. A clear, warm refusal protects commitments you have already made, which is what it is for.
What promise of yours does a recent no quietly protect?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
