The person checking the gate is protecting freedom by keeping it from becoming danger.

Rules at a threshold are easy to resent because their cost is immediate and their benefit is invisible. Nothing happening is the whole product. Someone standing at a gate is not the opposite of an open place; they are part of what keeps it open, since a space that becomes unsafe stops being free for anyone. The friction is small and shared, which is why it stings anyway.
You will pass a check of some kind this week. Try treating the person doing it as a colleague of the freedom rather than an obstacle to it. If a check truly serves nothing, take that up with whoever set it.
Whose limits on you turned out to keep you safe?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
