A note written for yourself can become confusing after the context that made it obvious disappears.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Notes are written by someone who already knows everything you are about to forget. At the time, three words carry a whole situation, so you write the three words and skip the situation, which is the part that evaporates first. A month later the note is technically accurate and completely useless. What seemed too obvious to record is exactly what goes missing.

Write for the version of you who has lost the context: add the why, the date and the detail you would think unnecessary. It takes an extra ten seconds. Then find an old note you cannot decode and rewrite it while you can still guess.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Can you still read the notes you left yourself last year?
