A family can become more welcoming by leaving its unfinished arguments off the guest’s plate.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A guest cannot take part in a dispute they did not grow up inside. When old grievances surface at the table, the visitor is handed a choice between sides, a history they do not know and a silence they have to fill. Hospitality here is mostly restraint: the argument is still real and it does not need an audience tonight. Postponing is not dishonesty, only timing.

Before people come over, agree with one other person which subject stays closed for the evening. If it surfaces anyway, redirect once, warmly, without a lecture. Return to it later, when only the people it belongs to are in the room.
