A storm heard from shelter feels different from the same storm crossed on foot.
RESILIENCE
RESILIENCE
The same conditions are a different event depending on where you meet them. From inside, rain on the roof is atmosphere; out on the road it is cold, blind and long. Nothing about the weather changed, only what it cost the person in it. That distance explains a good deal of how comfortable people talk about hardship they are not currently inside.
When you find something charming that somebody else is enduring, be careful with the word cosy. Ask what the day was actually like for them. And if you are the one out in it, you are allowed to say it was hard rather than picturesque.
Whose difficulty have you judged from a comfortable distance?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
