A room full of experts still needs someone willing to define the ordinary terms.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Expertise creates a shared vocabulary and then stops examining it. In a room where everyone knows the words, nobody checks whether they mean the same thing by them, and hours can be spent agreeing about different ideas. The person asking what a term actually means is doing work the room needs, and usually feels foolish doing it.

Be the one who asks for the plain definition, especially when you suspect you already know. It nearly always turns out that two people were using the word differently, and finding that early saves the whole discussion.
