The animal crossing the road does not know the road was built through its route.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

The route came first. What looks like an animal wandering into traffic is usually an animal following a path that existed long before the tarmac, and it has no way of learning that the terms changed. The mistake is not the creature’s. It belongs to whoever drew the line without asking what was already crossing there, which is also how many human changes get made.

When you next change something that other people move through, a process, a room, a route, ask what paths already ran across it. Building around existing habits costs less than insisting the habits were wrong.
