The light directed at one performer leaves somebody else working in darkness.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Attention behaves like a lamp: pointing it somewhere means everywhere else goes dark. The person in the beam is visible partly because a stage manager, an operator and a dresser are deliberately not visible, and the brightness of one depends on the arrangement that hides the others. That is how performance works, but it is easy to mistake for a ranking of contribution.
When you praise a result, ask who was in the dark for it to happen. Name one of them, to their face or in front of others. Recognition is not a fixed quantity, and moving the lamp costs the person in it nothing.
